BASIC SKILLS 1-6 - FUNdamentals

The "Skating Badge Skills" Classes, follow the Basic Skills 1-6 program, as outlined and provided by the USFSA.


Basic Skills Curriculum
The Basic Skills are the fundamentals of the sport. These six levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves — forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic 1-6 levels, skaters will have a basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of skating.


Basic 1

  1. Sit on ice and stand up
  2. March forward across the ice
  3. Forward two-foot glide
  4. Dip
  5. Forward swizzles — 6-8 in a row
  6. Backward wiggles — 6-8 in a row
  7. Beginning snowplow stop on two feet or one foot
  8. **Bonus Skill** Two-foot hop in place

Basic 2

  1. Scooter pushes  Right and Left
  2. Forward one foot glides Right and Left
  3. Backward two-foot glide — Glide the length of skater's height
  4. Rocking horse (one forward swizzle, one backward swizzle) — Repeat twice 
  5. Backward swizzles — 6-8 in a row
  6. Two-foot turns from forward to backward in place — clockwise and counterclockwise
  7. Moving snowplow stop
  8. **Bonus Skill** — Curves

Basic 3

  1. Beginning forward stroking showing correct use of blade
  2. Forward half swizzle pumps on a circle — 6-8 consecutive clockwise and counterclockwise
  3. Moving forward to backward two-foot turns on a circle — clockwise and counterclockwise
  4. Beginning backward one-foot glides focus on balance
  5. Backward snowplow stop — Right and Left
  6. Forward slalom
  7. **Bonus Skill** — Forward pivots — clockwise and counterclockwise

Basic 4

  1. Forward outside edge on a circle Right and Left
  2. Forward inside edge on a circle Right and Left
  3. Forward crossovers — clockwise and counterclockwise
  4. Backward half swizzle pumps on a circle — clockwise and counterclockwise
  5. Backward one-foot glides — Right and Left
  6. Beginning two-foot spin — Up to two revolutions
  7. **Bonus Skill** — Forward lunges — both legs

Basic 5

  1. Backward outside edge on a circle — Right and Left
  2. Backward inside edge on a circle — Right and Left
  3. Backward crossovers — clockwise and counterclockwise
  4. Forward outside three-turn — Right and Left
  5. Advanced two-foot spin — 4-6
  6. Hockey stop — both directions
  7. **Bonus Skill** — Side toe hop — Right and Left

Basic 6

  1. Forward inside three-turn — Right and Left
  2. Moving backward to forward two-foot turn on a circle — clockwise and counterclockwise
  3. Backward stroking
  4. Beginning one-foot spin — 2-4 revolutions, optional free leg position and entry
  5. T-stops  Right and Left
  6. Bunny hop
  7. Forward spiral on a straight line — Right or Left
  8. **Bonus Skill** — Shoot the duck — Right or Left
