The Figure Skating Program at the Greenwich Skating Club offers a variety of programs:

  • Group Classes
  • Pre-Paid Figure Skating Practice Sessions
  • Private or Semi-Private Lessons
  • Adult Programs



These classes follow the Basic Skills Program, as developed by the US Figure Skating Association. The mission is to provide a goal-oriented program that encourages ice skating at all levels and to enhance the quality of skating skills at these levels. Skaters are encouraged to register for multiple classes at their skill level for increased ice time and instruction, if desired.


The objectives of the program are:

  • To provide a fun and safe skating experience for the beginner as well as the more advanced skater
  • To teach correct technique of the simple basic elements
  • To promote health and physical fitness
  • To enable all participants to achieve the skills necessary to either skate for fun the rest of their lives or to move competently into the U.S. Figure Skating advanced test and/or competitive structure


1. Learn to Skate:

Designed for the younger skater (Pre-School and Kindergarten), the Learn to Skate program stresses preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on skates. This class will include fun and games to encourage enjoyment of skating. Any single-blade skates (figure, hockey, LL Bean velcro, etc.) may be worn for this class. Helmets are mandatory. Also, please remember to dress your child appropriately, especially in extremely cold weather. Kids must be 3 years or older.

                                        Saturday 8:00am**

* Additional classes at 12:50pm and 1:10pm will be added if necessary

** Additional class at 8:30am will be added if necessary


2. Skating Badge Skills:

These classes follow the Basic Skills 1-8 curriculum for the fundamental skills of skating, including forward skating, backward skating, stopping, crossovers and turns. Skaters will be placed in groups based on skill level and age, at the discretion of the professionals.

                                        Friday 1:15pm-1:45pm**

                                        Saturday 8:30am-9:00am

* This is a Combo class of Badge Skills, Basic Moves in the Field, and Beginning Jump & Spin – open to those at Basic 3 or higher

** This class occurs during the General Skating time – open to those ages 7+ with a maximum of 15 students


3. Beginning Jump & Spin:

This class focuses on the skills necessary to perform jumps and spins, as part of the Basic Skills 1-8 curriculum.

                                        Saturday 9:00am-9:30am

Prerequisite Level:             Must have passed Basic 2

4. Advanced Jump & Spin:

The Advanced Jump & Spin program teaches various jumps and spins, along with some footwork and power skating sequences.

Day/Time offered:             Monday 5:10pm-5:40pm

Prerequisite Level:             Free Skate 2 or higher


5. Advanced Moves in the Field

This class focuses on developing advanced edges and turns while emphasizing edge quality, extension, quickness and power.

Day/Time offered:             Tuesday 5:10pm-5:40pm

Prerequisite Level:             Must have passed the Preliminary Moves in the Field test


6. Intro to Synchro

***New for 2016-2017***

This class will introduce skaters to the fundamental principles and skills of synchronized figure skating, including the five basic elements: Circle, Line, Block, Intersection & Wheel. Come have fun with your friends!

Day/Time offered:             Saturday 9:15am-9:45am

Prerequisite Level:             Must have passed Basic 4




Pre-Paid Figure Skating Ice is available for skaters who would like to practice their skills outside of group class time. This is a great opportunity to enroll in private instruction and accelerate your skater’s progress.


Signing up for Pre-Paid Figure Skating Practice Sessions entitles the skater to attend any or all of the session times listed below, every week, throughout the season. These times are reserved for skaters focused on practicing their skills in a supportive, team-like environment. This is not meant for social gatherings or recreational skating. All skaters must be registered for Pre-Paid Figure Skating Practice sessions, and no guests are permitted.

Private or Semi-Private Lessons may be booked by an individual skater(s) during scheduled Pre-Paid Figure Skating Practice sessions or General Skating sessions. 1. Adult Skating:

This class is for the beginner or intermediate adult skater. Basic skating skills and edges will be emphasized.

2. Adult Skating with a Pro:

This time is reserved for private lessons for adults with a pro.
